Project One by Mercedes-AMG costs $2.7 million.

For a long time, Mercedes has promised a commercial version of the Project One hypercar. The first formal announcement was made in March of 2017, followed by the introduction of the initial concept later that year. However, it appears that the Project One will finally touch public roads after nearly five years of tease. The hybrid hypercar will have over 1,200 horsepower (895 kilowatts) and a price tag of $2.7 million when it is completed.

Every year, the number of high-performance SUVs increases, but if you're looking for a compact car that can outperform practically anything else on the road, go no further than the Mercedes-AMG C63 for 2021. The C63 and C63 S are based on the Mercedes-Benz C-class, however the C63 includes a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 469 horsepower in the C63 and 503 horsepower in the C63 S. The C63 also features a sportier suspension tune (you'll notice a stiffer ride) and some external modifications from the standard C-class that give it a more aggressive look. It comes in sedan, coupe, and convertible versions, and it drives like a Saturn V booster rocket is mounted to its roof. It also boasts a genuinely luxury cabin and loads of cutting-edge technology, so you're not sacrificing anything in exchange for the performance. The C63 was also named to our Editors' Choice list for 2021.

This year's C63 hasn't altered all that much. The panoramic roof in the sedan type and more paint colors from the non-AMG C-class sedan are now standard across the lineup, as is the 12.3 digital instrument cluster, which was previously optional.

While you may prefer the coupe or convertible, we think the sedan is the better option. We prefer the subtle elegance of a quick four-door since it's lighter than the coupe and easier to get in and out of for rear-seat passengers. Although it's difficult not to prefer the more powerful C63 S variant, the performance differences are minor. The nine-step AMG Traction Control system is only available on the S, but we found it to be overly invasive in the C63 coupe we drove in Lightning Lap 2019, so it's not a must-have. Instead, we'd go with the base C63 sedan and add the Exterior Lighting package for adaptive LED headlights and the AMG Performance front seats, which are extremely supportive.

A hand-built twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine powers the Mercedes-AMG C63 and C63 S in 2021. It produces 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque in the C63. The C63 S ups the ante with 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are equipped with a nine-speed automated transmission and rear-wheel drive. The normal C63 has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, while the S has an electronically limited top speed of 180 mph. The C63 S accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and sped around the quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds at 122 mph in our tests; we haven't tested a C63. A C63 S coupe ran a 2:57.1 lap in Lightning Lap 2019, putting it exactly behind the discontinued Cadillac CTS-V on our all-time list. An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential and AMG Ride Control suspension with variable dampers are standard on all C63s. On C63 S models, dynamic engine mounts are standard. The handling is superb. On our skidpad, the C63 S managed 1.02 g's of lateral acceleration and braked from 70 mph to a standstill in just 157 feet with summer tires. The ride is severe over bad pavement, thus this capacity comes at a cost in terms of comfort.

The EPA fuel economy of the C63 and C63 S are same, although there are variances in the body designs. The sedan gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Both the coupe and the cabriolet get 17 mpg in the city, but the coupe gets 26 mpg on the highway vs 24 for the convertible.

The regular-strength C63 comes standard with black faux-leather/microfiber upholstery, while the S variants include leather seats. Wood and metal interior accents are available in both models. The optional AMG Performance seats, which offer a ventilation feature, are a huge hit with us. Although the cabin can be loaded with electronics, this is a lovely automobile at heart, with materials and an atmosphere that match the premium asking price. The C63 sedan has a 12.6-cubic-foot trunk, while the C63 coupe has a 10.5-cubic-foot trunk. Both have a folding rear seat with a 40/20/40 split. When the top is up, the C63 cabriolet has a standard power-operated soft top (available in three colors) that provides 8.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity. It has a 50/50 split in the back seats.

A 10.3-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, as well as two USB connections, are standard in the 2020 Mercedes-AMG. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a Burmester surround-sound audio system, and a six-month SiriusXM satellite radio trial are all standard. Factory navigation and a head-up display are available as options. Optional AMG Drive Unit provides quick-access controls on the steering wheel for adjusting the car's many drivetrain and chassis parameters. AMG Track Pace is another option, which allows you to record vehicle performance data in the infotainment interface when driving on a road course.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not evaluated the AMG version of the C-class, although the standard Benz-branded C-class has received a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS. Basic safety features including a forward-collision system and blind-spot monitoring are standard on every C63. Level 2 semi-autonomous functions such as adaptive cruise control with automatic resumption capability in stop-and-go traffic and lane-change assist are among the additional driver-assistance aids offered (which can steer into the next lane for you). These things are included in the Driver Assistance package, which must be purchased with the Multimedia package.
